Who we are
Akwaaba plans private, tailor-made journeys in Ghana. Our address is One Airport Square, South Liberation Link, Airport City, Accra, Ghana. We decide how the personal data described here is used and are responsible for it. Write to us about anything on this page at [email protected].
What we collect
We collect only what you choose to send us, through the trip planner, the enquiry form or email:
- your name, email address and, if you give it, a phone number;
- your travel ideas: regions, dates or month, length, who is travelling (including the ages of children if you tell us), interests, pace, room preferences and a budget band;
- anything you write in free-text fields;
- once you ask us to book, the details needed to arrange the trip, such as names as they appear in passports, arrival and departure details, dietary needs and, only if you choose to tell us, health or access needs.
We do not take payment card details through this site.
Optional questions for diaspora travellers
The planner offers some optional questions, for example about family history or a family occasion you want to mark in Ghana. Answers may reveal information about racial or ethnic origin or religious belief, which data protection law treats as special category data. These questions are never required. If you answer them, we use the answers only to plan your trip, on the basis of your explicit consent, which you give by ticking the consent box and can withdraw at any time.
Why we use it, and on what basis
- To reply to your enquiry and plan your trip. Basis: steps taken at your request before entering into a contract, and, for special category data or health details, your explicit consent.
- To arrange and run your trip once you book, including passing what they need to the drivers, hotels, hosts and local experts who look after you. Basis: performance of a contract.
- To keep records we are required to keep, such as accounting records. Basis: legal obligation.
- To look after our business, for example to deal with a complaint or claim. Basis: our legitimate interests.
We do not sell your data, use it for automated decision-making, or send you news or offers unless you ask us to.
Who we share it with
Only those who need it: the drivers, hotels, lodges, hosts, guides and transport and activity providers who deliver your trip in Ghana, and the companies that provide our email, enquiry-form handling and website hosting. Each receives only what it needs. We may also share data where the law requires it.
Photos on this site
Photographs are loaded from our image delivery provider’s servers. When a page shows a photo, your browser requests it from there, which passes on your IP address and browser details as part of the request. No cookies are set through these image requests.
International transfers
Planning a trip to Ghana means sharing some details with people in Ghana, which may be outside the country where you live. Where the law requires it, we put appropriate safeguards in place for those transfers, such as contractual commitments, or rely on the transfer being necessary to arrange the trip you asked for. You can ask us about them.
How long we keep it
Enquiries that do not lead to a booking are deleted within two years of our last contact. Booking records are kept for as long as tax and accounting law requires, and then deleted. Health, access and diaspora-question answers are deleted once your trip is over, unless you ask us to keep them for a future trip.
Keeping it safe
We keep personal data in secure, access-controlled systems and share it only as described here. If something goes wrong that affects your data, we will tell you.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you can ask to see the data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to its use, receive a copy in a portable form, and withdraw consent at any time. Write to [email protected]. We will reply within one month.
You can also complain to a data protection regulator: in the UK the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk); in the EU your local data protection authority; in Ghana the Data Protection Commission.
