Volta highlands: Wli Falls, Mount Afadjato, Tafi Atome and Lake Volta
A green, walkable week east of the lake: the forest walk to Wli Falls, the climb up Afadjato, the mona monkeys of Tafi Atome, and a day on Lake Volta.
The highlands along the Togo border are the best walking country in the south. The trail to Wli's lower falls follows a stream through forest to a plunge pool; Afadjato is a short, steep climb; and at Tafi Atome a community-run sanctuary protects mona monkeys in sacred forest.
We combine the highlands with a day on Lake Volta at Akosombo, which breaks the drive from Accra.
What it involves
- The Wli walk is a couple of hours return on a mostly level path, with stream crossings. Afadjato is steep and short.
- Local guides are required at most sites; fees support the communities.
- Guesthouses are small and simple. Some have no air conditioning, which the cooler nights make easier.
