Time in the castle, and time after it

Cape Coast and Elmina are fishing towns twelve kilometres apart, each dominated by a whitewashed castle. Built as trading forts, they became places where captive Africans were held in dungeons before being forced onto ships across the Atlantic. They are part of a group of forts and castles on this coast inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

We plan these visits with a Ghanaian historian or a senior site guide, and we tell you plainly what the tour involves: the male and female dungeons, the condemned cell, the Door of No Return. Most people want time alone afterwards, so we leave the rest of the day empty. (to verify) (to verify)

Why go

For many diaspora travellers this is the reason for the trip, and it deserves more than an hour between other stops. Three nights on this coast let you see both castles on different days, attend a Sunday service or a festival if the calendar allows, and spend time in the towns themselves.

Elmina's harbour, crowded with painted canoes, and the Posuban shrines of Cape Coast's Asafo companies show the living towns around the monuments.
