Western coast
The western shore: Busua, Axim, Fort Apollonia, Nzulezu and Ankasa
A slow week on the coast towards Côte d'Ivoire: Busua's bay, the forts at Axim and Beyin, a canoe to the stilt village of Nzulezu, and the wet forest of Ankasa.
The coast west of Takoradi is the quietest stretch of Ghana's shoreline. Busua's bay is good for swimming and beginners' surf; Axim's Fort St Anthony and Beyin's Fort Apollonia stand above fishing towns.
From Beyin, a canoe crosses a lagoon and winds through reeds to Nzulezu, a village built on stilts over the water. Ankasa, further west, protects a wet evergreen forest with walking trails and very few visitors.
What it involves
- The canoe to Nzulezu takes about an hour each way and is exposed to the sun; there is no shade on the water.
- The sea on this coast has strong currents in places. We tell you where it is safe to swim.
- Ankasa's facilities are basic; we go as a day trip from Beyin unless you are a keen naturalist.
