Walking with elephants at Mole, and the Larabanga mosque
Morning and afternoon walks with an armed ranger among the elephants of Mole National Park, and a stop at Larabanga's mud mosque on the way.
At Mole you track elephants on foot. Rangers lead small groups out from the park headquarters in the early morning and late afternoon, down towards the waterholes where elephants come to drink in the dry season.
It is quieter and less choreographed than a game drive, and that is the point. You will also see antelope, warthogs and baboons around the lodge, and the birding is good. On the way in, we stop at Larabanga to see its old mosque with a guide from the village.
What it involves
- Walks last about two hours, on uneven ground in the heat. Wear closed shoes and neutral colours, and bring water.
- Walks are led by park rangers, who set the rules: keep quiet, keep together, keep your distance.
- Elephants are likely in the dry season and never guaranteed. We do not promise sightings.
- Visitors do not enter the Larabanga mosque; you see it from outside with a local guide.
