A night at the women's cooperative guesthouse in Sirigu, among houses painted in red, black and white earth; the basket weavers of Bolgatanga; and the crocodile ponds at Paga.
In Sirigu, men build the houses and women paint them, using earth pigments in red, black and white. The Sirigu Women's Organisation for Pottery and Art (SWOPA) runs a gallery, workshops and a simple guesthouse, and a night there is one of the most memorable stays in the country.
Around Bolgatanga, weavers make the straw baskets sold across the world; we visit a village group at work. At Paga, the crocodiles in the village ponds are held sacred. Nearby Pikworo, a former slave camp, can be added with a community guide.
What it involves
- The murals are the women's own art. We visit to see and to buy their work, not to photograph patterns for reuse.
- The guesthouse is very simple: shared facilities in places and fans, not air conditioning.
- The far north is hot, especially from March to May. We plan outdoor visits early and late.
