Akuapem Ridge & Krobo
Gardens, cocoa and glass beads in the hills above Accra
An hour north, and the air changes
The Akuapem Ridge rises just north of Accra, high enough to be noticeably cooler. Aburi's botanical gardens date from colonial times; the road through the hills is lined with carvers' stalls; and cocoa grows on the slopes, where its story in Ghana begins.
Beyond the ridge are the Krobo towns around Odumase, where beads are made from recycled glass, ground, moulded and fired in clay moulds. A workshop visit shows the whole process. (to verify) (to verify) (to verify)
Why go
It is the gentlest way to leave the capital: an easy day trip, or one quiet night in the hills before the Volta. The bead workshops are some of the most hands-on maker visits in the country.
