Guinea fowl in Tamale by nine

Tamale is the largest city of the north and its crossroads: flights from Accra land here, roads fan out to Mole, Bolgatanga and the east, and the city's mosques, markets and motorbikes give it a pace of its own.

For heritage travellers, Salaga lies south-east of Tamale. Its old market was a major centre of the inland slave trade; local guides show the market square, the wells and the baobab where captives were held. (to verify)

Why go

Tamale ties the north together. A night here breaks long drives, and its street food (guinea fowl grilled late into the evening) is reason enough to stop.
